Berlin, 2nd October 2006. The post-operative use of the patented Bunion Aid™ splint system an innovative orthesis with joint function developed in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute allows much faster mobilisation after hallux valgus surgery with greater build-up of strength than is the case with traditional splints without joint function.
According to a study by Dr. Roland Werzinger, a specialist in orthopaedics and general medicine in Munich, there were significant improvements in the gait of the study participants with the Bunion Aid™ splint in the 5th week postoperatively, which was apparent in up to 13% more rolling off the first ray. In contrast, the control group, using a classic rigid night splint, had negligible kilogram force values in the first ray and exhibited increased and unphysiological rolling over the lateral edge of the foot.
Thus, the advantage of the Bunion Aid™ splint when used postoperatively is early physiological loading. The improved rolling normalises the patient’s gait in a markedly shorter period than in the control group.
The biomechanics of the Bunion Aid™ orthesis with a joint at the level of the bunion, which, unlike traditional ortheses, fits into almost any shoe so that it can be worn while walking, corresponds to the basic mechanical principle of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Bunion Aid™ is secured to the foot with a toe and metatarsal bandage, thus supporting the foot’s transverse arch and also supports the middle of the foot with a pad (transverse arch support). This provides optimal stabilisation for the mid-foot and maintains and supports the corrected toe position even when the foot is loaded during walking. Bunion Aid™ combines the corrective function of a night splint with the support function of a metatarsal arch insole in a single product.
Because of the mobile joint of the Bunion Aid™ splint, the corrected metatarsophalangel joint can move freely. No incorrect levers and pressures that might interfere with the course of healing act on the recently operated joint. The joint is not fixed in a rigid position but rather its natural movement is promoted. The patient’s perception of pain serves to regulate the toe’s radius of movement virtually automatically.
With the Bunion Aid™ splint, the surgically achieved correction of the toe can be stabilised permanently and the postoperative rehabilitation period can be shortened substantially by early mobilisation so the outcome of surgery can be optimised.
